Shannen Maria Doherty nació el 12 abril de 1971 en Memphis, Tennesse, EE.UU. Su padre, Tom, trabaja en un banco y su madre, Rosa, es  dueña de un salón de belleza. Su familia se mudó a Los Angeles a la edad de 7, y Shannen ha estado trabajando  en la industria del entretenimiento desde que Michael Landon la descubrió, y cuando  tenía solamente 11 años, la lanzó como Jenny Wilder en la serie "Little House: A new beginning". Luego ella actuó en la serie "Our House" con Wilford Brimley y Deidre Hall y, en 1990 interpretó a Brenda Walsh en "Beverly Hills 90210", el show que la hizo reconocida. 

Doherty también ha tenido éxito en películas como la comedia negra "Heathers" (donde también actuó la actriz Jennifer Rhodes/Grams en Charmed) con Christian Slater y Winona Ryder en 1989. También protagonizó con Helen Hunt y Sarah Jessica Parker la comedia para adolescentes "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", "MallRats", y películas para televisión "The Ticket" y "Friends 'Til The End" entre otras.
